Introduction
Breckenridge has an abundance of trials and dirt roads. The trails have a variety of levels of difficulty suitable for all ages. Along many of the trails there are historical sites that can be very interesting and educational. From backcountry roads to single track through the woods, Breckenridge has an amazing amount of terrain to explore. On this website I will be addressing the rides around Breckenridge that are suitable for children six through twelve depending on their experience and abilities. Keep in mind that you will be riding at 9,600 feet to 10,600 feet elevation. This will most likely impact you so go easy and have fun. All the rides have a Garmin Map that you can click on to get detailed ride information. This can be very handy when considering time, distance and elevation gain. If you have a Garmin device these rides can be uploaded to it and provide you with turn by turn navigation.
Trail Safety:
While riding on these trails please be sure to look at all signs and posts that may have trail regulations on them. These signs were put up by the town of Breckenridge for your safety. Please understand that these signs are there for a purpose and will prevent the trails from wearing. Some proper bike etiquette is, if you are going downhill and someone is going up, pull of for the person coming up so they can pass. Also, yield to hikers and runners and try not to startle them. Please stay on the designated trail as riding off of it causes the trail to widen and erode.
Preparation:
To have fun mountain biking be sure to be prepared for all weather conditions, mechanical issues and personal needs. Some of the necessities include:
-A helmet -Small Bike Pump
-A rain jacket -Sunglasses
-A warm extra layer -Shoes with good grip
-LOTS of water -Tire patch kit or spare tube
-Snacks -Small first aid kit
-A good attitude
-Bike Tools
Many of these items can be found at one of Breckenridge's many bike shops. A personal favorite of mine is Carvers. It is located at 203 North Main Street in Breckenridge.
Disclaimer:
Although I tried to make this guide as reliable and as detailed as possible, please remember that conditions change daily and trails can become muddy or loose depending on the weather. Most of these rides are best June through September or later if it has not snowed or rained too much.
I would like to thank the Breckenridge Open Space program and the Summit County Fat Tire Society for creating and helping to keep these trails in amazing conditions. Please consider donating to these organizations.
